Saree Shopping in Kolkata

Kolkata is truly, a haven for saree shoppers. The city is littered with thousands of saree shops in every nook and corner. They come in all sizes, ranging from small, neighborhood stores to sprawling wholesale markets as well as giant business-houses with multiple retail outlets across the city. The abundance of shops, powered by the rich heritage of handloom weaving in Bengal makes saree shopping an exciting yet affordable experience in this city.
Here we have listed some of the famous saree shops of Kolkata known for their collection of traditional Bengal handloom sarees.
1. Gariahat: This is a prime shopping district of south Kolkata, spread around the junction of Gariahat Road and Rashbehari Avenue. Walking in any direction from the Gariahat junction will lead you to numerous saree shops, big and small. Some of the famous ones here are: Dhakeswari Bastralaya, Adi Dhakeswari Bastralaya, Select Stores, Traders Assembly, Indian Silk House, Indian Silk Museum, RMCA Basak, RMGC Basak, Sriniketan, Benarasi Hut, Kanishka, Tantuja, Saree Sansar, Shibani, Balaram Saha, Adi Bangasree Bastralaya, Kalamandir, Chhaya Stores, Gouranga Bastralaya.
2. Rashbehari Avenue: The entire stretch of Rashbehari Avenue from the Gariahat junction to S.P. Mukherjee Road is lined with shops and malls. The Triangular Park area has another cluster of large saree shops such as Benarasi Kuthi, Adi Dhakeswari Bastralaya, Priya Gopal Bishoyi and Adi Bangasree Bastralaya. Further down the road you will find Select Stores and P. Majumder at Deshapriya Park.
3. College Street: College Street in central Kolkata is famous for the many colleges and bookstores it houses. Many saree shops surround the junction of College Street and M.G. Road. Mohini Mohan Kanjilal, Adi Mohini Mohan Kanjilal and Indian Silk House are the 3 large ones in this area.
4. Burrabazar: Adjacent to the famous Howrah Bridge, this is one of the largest wholesale markets in Asia. Navigate your way hustling with traders, vendors, hawkers and chock-a-block traffic to get the best deals in wholesale and retail shopping. The Priya Gopal Bishoyi outlets have one of the best collections of Bengal handloom sarees here. Other saree shops can be found in the Kalakar Street area.
